1. Chelsea Cutler
Chelsea Cutler has become one of my favorite female artists lately. She brings a unique, catchy, and well-produced sound to the electronic realm that doesn't rely on complicated production or melodies. Her songs are simple pop songs, but her production takes them to another level with her use of electric guitar riffs, relatable lyrics and her quirky voice. Cutler is only 21, and recently left college as an Amherst student-athlete to pursue music full time. After a recent tour with rising artist Quinn XCII, Cutler became more well-known in larger cities and has made a big name for herself on Spotify, showing up often on Spotify's "Pop Rising" and "New Music Friday" playlists. I love every song she puts out. Her songs are so well done and so easy to listen to. And, as a college woman, she still tells stories and talks about topics that I find relatable and important: long distance relationships, losing people, and the beautiful, simple moment of falling asleep in the t-shirt of someone you love. To me, her real talent lies in her production -- which she does herself -- and the ways that she uses her voice and instruments in perfectly arranged ways to create songs that are hard to get out of your head. Listen to "You're Not Missing Me" and "Out of Focus."
2. Billie Eilish
You're probably living under a rock if you haven't noticed the rising fame of 16-year old Billie Eilish. With her sultry, mature voice, coupled with her intense songwriting, she's pretty hard to miss. Her music isn't blatantly electronic, but uses electronic elements in the production to create simple yet undeniably beautiful music. Her songs range from topics like getting lost in someone's eyes to murdering her friends. Her first album/EP thing, "Dont Smile At Me," really does not have one bad or lame song on it. And if that album didn't bring her talent into the spotlight, her most recent release with Khalid definitely did (listen to it here). Even though she's only 16, Eilish has a songwriting style and talent that goes well beyond her years, and I'm so excited to hear more from her. Listen to "ocean eyes" and "hostage."
3. Tove Styrke
Tove Styrke's new releases have been both aesthetically and melodically pleasing as well as... FIRE. I like, really enjoy her (which is evident in my complete lack of grammar skills as I talk about her.) Every new song she's put out recently has been so different, and yet reflects her specific electronic style. Her voice is more soft spoken, and her words tend to blend together in her songs, but somehow it works? She contrasts her softer voice with an intricate electronic production style with tons of banging drums, pauses, and vocoder effects (my favorite effect ever.) Styrke toured with Lorde during the Melodrama tour and recently put out an EP/mini-album with most of her new singles as well as some new tracks. Her songs just really please me aesthetically, and her lyrics are super cute and relatable. She's so charming. Probably because she's Swedish. I just really enjoy her, okay??? Listen to "Sway" and "Mistakes."
4. Sasha Sloan
SASHA SLOAN IS MY GIRL. I first heard her beautiful voice on ODESZA's song "Falls" (which is a total banger) and since then, I've been hooked on her. She mixes simple, chill electronic styles with somber piano ballads and introspective lyrics. She really tugs at my sad girl heart strings, and even recently put out an EP called Ep 1: Sad Girl. If you know me, you know I love writing and listening to sad songs. Sloan does The Sad Song really well, maintaining the sadness and hurt in the lyrics while also including an electronic kick to keep things interesting. For example, her song "Runaway," literally has a trap beat in the chorus as she sings about ruining a special relationship over a sad piano track... and that's all the instrumentation. Her production is so simple, and the poignant songs really stand out through her voice and her lyrics. She throws in just enough instrumental intrigue to keep the song moving, but her lyrics still tug at your heartstrings. She sings about very relatable topics, such as running away from a relationship when she's scared and pretending to have fun at parties when she just wants to go home (me). She's a good one, and I think that some serious studio time and advanced production will make her music stand out even more and become even more emotional. Listen to "Normal" and "Fall."
5. Sigrid
Who doesn't love the cute and undeniably charming Sigrid? I swear, all the Norwegian singers are the cutest (see: AURORA). I first heard Sigrid last summer with the Don't Kill My Vibe EP. She just dropped a new EP with three new great songs on it, and I'm back to being obsessed. She has a really fun and classic electronic style, but brings new ideas to the table through her melodies and production. Also, her voice is cute as a button. I honestly love her sadder, softer side a little bit more, as shown her songs "I Don't Want To Know" and "Fake Friends." But then again, she GOES OFF on her more upbeat songs like "Strangers" and "Plot Twist." She's just all around awesome. Like all these women, she has a spirit and energy that's all her own, and she sings about very relatable topics. Listen to "High Five" and "Plot Twist."
